Do Some Spring Reading With Some of P&K Staff Favorites

The Snowy Day

by Ezra Jack Keats

My favorite book from childhood is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Having grown up in the gulf south, a snowy day was an extremely rare thing, so reading about a little boy as he enjoyed this special day seemed like a peek into an unknown, magical world. The unique artwork and a sweet text won this classic book the Caldecott Award.

South Mississippi Celebrates the Gulf

“For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),

It’s always our self we find in the sea.”

Spring is arriving at the Mississippi Gulf Coast, chasing away the winter blues. Warmer weather and waters entice residents to embrace the season and venture out for family-friendly activities. Family-oriented events often bring to mind pony rides, face painting, glow sticks, sticky “cotton candy” hands, and very tired parents.

The answer is: hummingbirds.

The hummingbird is a favorite bird for children and adults to watch in their garden bird feeders. According to “fun facts” in a 2012 article from The Bird House in Ocean Springs, the hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world.

Smokeless Tobacco Is No Less Harmful Than Smoking

Dip, chew, spit, snuff—don’t let those funny-sounding names fool you. The health effects of using smokeless tobacco can be every bit as serious as a smoking habit.

As part of the RAT (Reject All Tobacco) campaign, school kids from across the state get the straight-up facts about cigarettes and chewing tobacco. For example, through the gorat.com website, grade-school children discover that spit tobacco causes cancer of the mouth, throat, and gums—yikes.
