The Family Forum: Save More to Give More

Christmas is known as the holiday of giving, but sometimes all that giving can give nightmares when the credit card bills arrive. Believe me, those nightmares don’t take holidays!

During this time, we all seem to get caught in the gift shopping frenzy. After the big day, there is often buyer’s remorse for the hundreds of dollars spent on gifts and toys. It’s sometimes difficult to remember that the cool race car you bought Johnny on sale or the beautiful doll you got Sally on clearance will actually end up costing you double by the time you pay off the credit card. If you are not at that place in life yet, you will be when you realize that cash is king and saving cash rules over all!

Kid Craft: Edible Winter Tree Scene

This activity is one the entire family will enjoy. It is similar to the craft I presented in this magazine last month, but it is transformed with a winter theme. The resulting edible craft may be used in different ways, according to the size of the family, the size of the table, and how it is used. This all may be done a day or two ahead of the dinner, as a family activity in preparation for the “big day,” or it can be done on the day itself as a special activity for the children. This project will need some supervision/instruction, which could be done by an older child or teen.

Trekkie? Whovian? Star Wars Freak? Celebrate the Inner Geek!

Is your child a Whovian? A Trekkie? A fan of classic comics or Star Wars? Let us just face it: we ALL have some sort of inner geek hiding deep inside. Occasionally bringing that geek to the surface and giving it some love is important in fostering creativity, especially among young people.

One way to embrace and celebrate your child’s “inner geek” is to attend Geekonomicon, held Dec. 11-13 in Biloxi.
