Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) May Be Affecting Your Child’s Ability to Listen and Learn

Auditory Processing Disorder is a hidden learning disability that affects 43% of children struggling in school. Individuals with APD have an abnormality in the auditory neurological system that affects the brains ability to filter and process sound. This causes distortion and/or delay in auditory signal transmission, which results in inaccurate coding of sound. Since these individuals struggle to process (or interpret) what they hear, it causes listening problems that often mimic a hearing loss.

Museums are informal learning environments and children’s museums, especially, make learning hands-on, interactive and most importantly fun! This is fundamental for capturing the interests and minds of our youngest audiences. At the Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM), we take fun seriously but we also take the learning value of our educational mission seriously too.

The Gulf Coast … A Slow, Easy, Welcoming Life for Families

When I moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I was pleasantly surprised by how, as a newcomer, it was easy to acclimate to our new home. It was 2003 when my husband and I -- and our toddler and newborn baby girl -- moved to Diamondhead, in Hancock County. It didn’t take long before we were settled in and feeling as if we had found the perfect place for that exact time and phase of our lives.

Ed Said Returns with New Music and Friends!

Mississippi children’s favorite rapping puppet is preparing to drop fresh, new music and videos in 2016. Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s Ed Said teaches kids about staying active and eating healthy with his songs, dances and games.

In January, Ed Said will release new songs and videos about foods he has recently discovered, like leafy greens, tomato, avocado, super fruit, citrus and more. Ten new music videos and webisodes will be launched one at a time beginning Jan. 11, and you can find them all at www.edsaid.org.
