Pregnant or Planning to Become Pregnant? Here’s the Facts About Zika

The Zika virus has been in the news lately, and women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant might want to educate themselves about this risk that has been increasingly making headlines. Zika joins influenza, West Nile, and other viruses expectant moms might be concerned about.

The Zika virus comes primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, although sexual transmission from an infected partner is also possible.

When the kids were little … well … I’d let them win. When they hit that two-digit birthday, though, all bets were off. Nowadays, you have to learn how to win and to lose gracefully around this house.

The Rare Puzzle of Kawasaki Disease

Sometimes, being a parent means occasionally facing uncommon medical situations that we may have never heard of before. One of these situations, which affected one of my children, is something called Kawasaki Disease.

"Kawasaki Disease is often frightening because children are febrile (feverish), ill-appearing and often initial tests are not helpful in making the diagnosis," said Dr. Van Wurm, MD, FAAP, a fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics and pediatrician with Pediatric Associates in Ocean Springs.

Pascagoula River Audubon Center: An Education in Nature for the Whole Family

As we cruised slowly upriver on a beautiful summer day, the narrator of our two-hour boat tour, hosted by the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, noted subtle changes in the diverse plant and animal life as we traveled from coastal salt marsh into a blackwater river swamp system.

Children and adults alike enjoyed the fun and learning experience shared on the trip, where they created memories that will last a lifetime.
